P7 pupils travel back to 1845

27th Feb 2020

As part of their World Around Us topic this term the P7 pupils are studying Irish history of the 1840s. To help bring this period in history to life they travelled to the Ulster American Folk Park in Omagh Co Tyrone. There the children were brought back in time to possibly the darkest days in Irish history, right back to the Great Famine of 1845-48 They visited a selection of houses owned by the wealthy, the tenant farmers and dwellings rented by the poorest Irish families of the time. They listened to stories from their guides and were able to taste a few morsels of traditional Irish cooking like warm buttered soda bread, hot homemade vegetable soup, and apple pancakes.

The pupils then were transported by boat to the New World....America....were they witnessed how life was so different for many of the Irish who emigrated.Have a peep at some of our photos ......there will be lots more soon so keep an eye on our school website.
