St Patrick’s Academy Dungannon, Cup Winners

19th Jun 2023

St Patrick’s Academy in Dungannon hosted their annual gaelic football blitz on Friday 16th June 2023 for P7 teams from large schools in a boys and a girls 9-a-side team competition. Our school entered two teams . The girls were in a group with six other schools meaning they had five matches to play. With the help of Conor Byrne, Orlaith’s dad in P7, the girls battled and won every match qualifying them directly to the semi final stages. The boys faced five teams on the 3G pitches , again coming out as winners having beaten all teams in their group stages . They too were directly through to the semi final stages. 18 girls teams were narrowed down to 4 where out Girls met up with a fancied St Mary’s Donamore team. Our girls were too strong and proceeded to the final . The boys met St Jarleths pS Blackwatertown in their semi. It’s amazing how much football can be played in two 6 minute halves. Our heroes battled and battled and came out 4 point victors to propel them into to finals along with our girls team.
Our girls met St Mary’s Pomeroy in their final. We led at half time and proved too strong for the Pomeroy team in the second half snd were crowned winners of the girls large school event. Such as achievement . The pressure was on the boys team now. In their final they faced St Joseph’s PS Galbally. Again in an end to end game our lads battled and were one point ahead at half time . But with an early goal in the second half the St Joseph’s boys proved too strong winning by 4 in the end. Our boys were heart broken. So,so close. However, what a day and what great St Patrick’s memories these boys and girls had created. We are so proud of our children and the effort they put in on the pitch wearing that black and white jersey.A big thanks also to Conor Byrne, Jill Mc Gee and Paula Enright who helped Mr O Hare so much on the day. Much appreciated as always. A great day of Gaelic games from our County.
